South East London’s First Ukrainian Community Library

The Heritage Bookshelf: South East London’s First Ukrainian Community Library Opens Its Doors

New Arrivals Support CIC is proud to announce the launch of The Heritage Bookshelf—the first Ukrainian community library in South East London, designed to serve Ukrainian refugees, migrants, and new arrivals seeking connection, comfort, and cultural continuity.

This one-of-a-kind project is more than just a library. The Heritage Bookshelf is a community-led space that offers access to over 300 Ukrainian books for children, teenagers, and adults. It’s a sanctuary where families can reconnect with their heritage, preserve their native language, and participate in cultural life right here in the UK.

Why The Heritage Bookshelf Matters

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, thousands of displaced people have arrived in the UK under the Homes for Ukraine scheme and other resettlement routes. At New Arrivals Support CIC, we’ve seen firsthand how critical language, culture, and community spaces are to the emotional well-being of those starting over.

The Heritage Bookshelf gives Ukrainian families a place to:

📚 Borrow books in their native language
🧒 Engage children with stories that reflect their roots
🎨 Take part in cultural events, reading clubs, and community workshops
🫶 Feel seen, safe, and connected

It’s a powerful example of how grassroots refugee support can nurture both integration and identity.
